About
ARTIST BIO
Artist, world traveler, former lawyer, and amateur historian. Thomas has been called “a man of many talents”, but art has always been his driving passion. Drawing and painting since childhood, Thomas shifted from primarily acrylic and watercolors to oils in 2020 and immediately fell in love with the medium. His original oil paintings are inspired by the beauty in the world, the humor in the mundane, how light dances and interacts with objects, and landscapes of places which spring emotion and memory in the viewer.
Raised in Cottonwood Heights, Thomas now lives in Millcreek with his wife and puppy.
ARTIST STATEMENT
It’s amazing to me how an artist’s interpretation of light on a subject can spring a well of emotions and jog distant memories from the viewer.
When I am in the studio I am being inspired by and capturing the drama of how light interacts and dances with objects. From the tiniest colorful refraction of light through glass or rain, to the sublime spectacle of sunlight piercing clouds in the mountains, even how neon bathes cityscapes in warm reflection at night.
I love painting night scenes and dark dramatic still life, where light makes its ubiquitous presence known in the most impressive and pronounced way. Objects melt into the background as the edge is lost, leaving only pinpoints of reflection and shadow to give the impression of form to the viewer.
My work is intended to provoke emotion and memory in the viewer. I am happiest when someone views my work and it gives them the impression of sitting their father’s study, the smell of walking the streets of San Francisco in the rain, or the mood of walking into their favorite bar. It is those deeply personal and subjective feelings which I hope to inspire.
